Doulas - also called birth companions - are an increasingly welcome presence for women about to have a baby. The school's Birth Companions Program is preparing students to fill this unique role during labor and birth.

Students receive doula training from a DONA-certified trainer and learn about community health from school faculty when they take the course Community Perspectives on the Childbearing Process. Student nurse doulas provide physical, emotional and educational support and attend births at the hospital of the mother’s choosing in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Serving 70-80 women per year, the Birth Companions Program is free-of-charge and provided to anyone requesting the service. Women or health care providers may call the telephone referral line at (410) 614-6458 for information in English and Spanish.

The Birth Companions Program was one of six organizations nationally recognized as a finalist for the 16th annual Monroe E. Trout Premier Cares Award
