HAYLEY D. MARK, PhD, MPH, RN
Assistant Professor
Department of Community-Public Health
"Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very
important that you do it."
- Mahatma Gandhi
Dr. Hayley Mark brings to The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing both a
spirit of inquiry and an extensive research and publication track record. Her
primary research interests are in sexually transmitted disease (STD), health
behaviors, and health disparities. Dr. Mark began working in the area of STDs
during graduate school when she counseled students about protecting themselves
from these under-reported, and often misunderstood, diseases. Since that time,
Dr. Mark has undertaken research and advocacy in the area of STD prevention. She
has recently completed an investigation to measure the emotional toll of a
positive test for herpes on college students, the results of which will help
clinicians offer more effective counseling and follow-up. She also has been a
co-investigator on a study to develop, implement, and evaluate a prevention
program that educates teen girls and their mothers about the increased health
risks of douching. Mark has found that when it comes to STDs, straight talk—an
approach she advances among her students—is the most effective method, whether
presenting her research findings or counseling patients.
